Knowing when to take a pregnancy test can be confusing.

Do you take one as soon as you have symptoms, or do you wait until you’ve missed a period? How will you know if the result is incorrect?

The EPIC Center is here to clarify and cut through the confusion. Below, we’ll explain the best time to test for pregnancy.

Clarifying an at-home result is simple. Schedule a no-cost appointment for lab-quality pregnancy testing today.

How Does a Pregnancy Test Work?

All pregnancy tests, whether they are urine or blood-based, detect hCG. This essential hormone is produced by the placenta shortly after implantation.

Pregnancy tests produce a positive result when hCG levels rise to detectable levels. However, timing is crucial—an accurate result depends on it.

Timing Matters

A test can produce a “false-negative result” if you are indeed pregnant, but hCG levels are not yet detectable. This can be puzzling, especially if you’re experiencing typical pregnancy symptoms like nausea or fatigue.

This is why it’s best to wait to take a test until after a missed period (even a week after). That way, you’re more likely to receive an accurate result. Taking the test first thing in the morning (right after you wake up) can improve its accuracy because your urine will be at its most concentrated.

If you have irregular periods, it can be challenging to determine when to test for pregnancy. Try testing 21 days after unprotected sexual intercourse.

If you receive a negative result but still suspect you’re pregnant, you can wait a few days and text again or follow up with your healthcare provider.

This can be a stressful time, but you aren’t alone. We’re here to help.
