What Should I Know?
An ultrasound is a diagnostic tool used to view your body’s internal structures. It can identify various medical conditions, assist healthcare providers during a procedure, and more.
During pregnancy, an ultrasound views your uterus and ovaries. It also monitors the pregnancy and can alert the provider to specific medical issues.
The sonographer or technician uses a handheld device called a transducer, which emits sound waves that bounce back. These sound waves are then converted into electrical signals. The signals become images that can be viewed on a computer screen.
Most women have two ultrasounds during pregnancy, but the number can vary based on whether you’re high-risk, have a health condition, or if your healthcare provider wants you to have more.
Types of Obstetric Ultrasounds
When a transvaginal ultrasound is performed, a sonographer (or ultrasound technician) will place a wand-like device called a transducer into your vagina. This is done during early pregnancy to provide the clearest image.
This type of ultrasound is slightly invasive (similar to inserting a tampon), so you may feel some mild discomfort when the transducer is inserted.
An abdominal ultrasound is typically performed after 7-8 weeks of pregnancy. Instead of being inserted into your vagina, a transducer will be guided over your abdomen. A gel is applied beforehand to your abdomen so that the sound waves can be transmitted more efficiently.
This type of ultrasound is noninvasive—meaning nothing is inserted into your body. An abdominal ultrasound is always performed first to determine whether or not a transvaginal ultrasound is needed.
Confirm Key Pregnancy Details With Us
Information is your best tool at this stage. EPIC Center offers lab-quality pregnancy testing at no cost. If you receive a positive result, an ultrasound technician will perform a limited ultrasound.
This ultrasound will determine whether your pregnancy has a heartbeat and is progressing, how far along you are, and where the pregnancy is located. It can also inform you of a condition like miscarriage or ectopic pregnancy—the latter requires emergency treatment to prevent complications.
We’re a safe, non-judgmental resource for you to find information. Your health matters, and we’ll provide the clarity you need.
